Care and Cleaning of Rubber Sports Flooring

Sports flooring can be used in a variety of different situations and locations. You’ll find rubber sports flooring in gyms, arenas, locker rooms, health centers, and sports facilities. Really rubber sports flooring can be used anywhere you might need to prevent slips and falls that could result from slick surfaces, or where you would want to absorb sound such as a music studio, or to create a more comfortable place to stand that also experiences high traffic such as behind a retail or coffee counter.

Rubber flooring is extremely durable, but it will still need regular care and maintenance to maintain its style and function. Fortunately, rubber flooring generally requires less maintenance than other flooring types, so keeping your tiles or rolled rubber sheets in perfect condition will only require periodic care.

Cleaning Rubber Sports Flooring

Rubber floors are highly resilient and slip-resistant, they can absorb sound and impact and resist the growth of mold and bacteria; regardless, you still need to keep them clean. Without regular cleaning, dirt and grit can grind into the floor material causing it to lose its shine and natural “give” that makes it so comfortable to stand and walk on

Rolled sports flooring can be cleaned in the same way as most other floors. To keep your rubber flooring in the best possible condition, be sure to clean it at least once a week (daily or every other day if your floors experience high traffic) and periodically do a deeper clean.

Dry vacuuming your rubber floors daily or weekly will remove dirt and debris. For businesses with heavy foot traffic, vacuuming daily is recommended. Anywhere with less traffic can vacuum weekly.

Damp mop weekly, or as needed, as well. Use a mild detergent and the least amount of water you can while still getting the floors clean. (Harsh chemicals, solvents or acids can erode the rubber flooring, so avoid these at all costs.)

Plan to use a wet-vac once a month, or for areas without much traffic, every few months. Dampen the floor with a traditional mop before you start using the web-vac, and be sure to use a mild detergent. Let the cleaning solution act on the floors for 10 minutes before going over them again to rinse. Choose the soft brush option, change your water frequently, and remove excess water from the floors to help them dry quickly.

Caring for Rubber Flooring

In addition to regular cleaning, you can keep your rubber floors looking great with some simple maintenance steps.

Clean Up Spills

Most rubber flooring products are water-resistant, but you should still prevent the material from getting soaked. Excessive liquid can affect the flooring adhesive, causing it to pull off your floor.

Avoid Chemicals

You can seal your rubber flooring, but be forewarned that adding chemicals or waxes to the product could change the way it looks.

As mentioned previously, don’t use strong solvents or anything with acids, which can erode the surface of your flooring, when cleaning your rubber sports flooring.
