Don’t Get Stuck on Basement Floor Ideas
Wednesday, June 10, 2015
For many homes in the past, the basement was almost a place of banishment; old toys, clothing that no longer fit, not-used exercise equipment, and many other items would all gather there. But in modern times, the basement has become more like a second living room or even a rumpus room in homes. Making a basement into a livable space rather than just another storage space requires some interior designing, which includes choosing a basement flooring option. As how you want your basement to look is up to you — and depending on where you live, certain floor choices simply aren’t viable in a basement — below are a few basement floor ideas that the team at Timeless Designs Flooring knows won’t make you feel banished.
Before you can start looking at any basement flooring, however, there is something more important to decide: how you will use your basement, now that it is no longer an extra storage space. Are you in need of another living room in your home? Do the kids need a space that’s all their own to play? Have you decided to take the plunge and create your own media room? Will this be the quintessential man cave? Once you’ve determined what the purpose of your soon-to-be-upgraded basement will be, then you can start the task of browsing basement flooring choices.
It also depends on where you live that can predetermine what basement flooring could be the best choice for your home. If your new floor is going to be installed above a concrete subfloor, then floors that don’t hold up well against moisture, such as solid hardwood or laminate, aren’t necessarily the best choices for such a basement. These two floor types can actually absorb excess water, which isn’t wanted in any room in a home. But, there are some cushier options available as well.
For a basement where moisture isn’t necessarily an issue, then carpeting is the pinnacle of comfort — and not just for feet! Acting as an insulator, carpeting will keep your basement warm on cold days, but not too warm that you can’t enjoy the room on a hot day. Plus, if your basement is your children’s playroom, carpet not only acts as an added safety feature as it helps prevent unwanted slips and falls, but it also acts as a form of soundproofing. Meaning, your children can play make-believe as loudly as they want, and you probably won’t hear them. Which makes carpeting also perfect for your basement media room as well. But how do you determine what variety of carpet fits your style? It all traces back to the new intended purpose of your basement.
If you're creating an extra living space, if you want to have an exceptionally classic or uniform appearance, choose carpeting that matches the color(s) of your furniture or continue a similar tone throughout the whole room. Subtle, yet relaxing. But, if you’re hoping for a more bold statement with basement floor ideas, something new to try is patterned area rugs. Placing these together, side-by-side, you’ll have something large enough to cover the whole floor, which will be cushy underfoot, as well as provide patterns to your newly designed room. Don’t worry about seams either; when put together and furniture is placed on top, they won’t be noticeable. (And did we mention this effect can be achieved with carpet tiles?)
But carpet won’t hold up in a home where there is moisture in a basement environment. When that is the case in your home, there is always LVP, luxury vinyl plank. Designed to look and feel just like wood, luxury vinyl plank is actually — you guessed it! — vinyl flooring. What makes this an ideal basement flooring? For one, it’s moisture resistant, so you won’t have to worry about it absorbing any extra water. But as a below ground basement can be a typically dark room, we don’t recommend just any luxury vinyl plank; right now, a favorite is light-colored luxury vinyl plank. Why a lighter color? As many basements don’t get a multitude of natural lighting, keeping the floor a lighter color will help brighten the room. Plus, by choosing LVP, your basement will still have the enchanting feel of hardwood, but can withstand the moisture typically found in a basement.
With a plethora of basement floor ideas and numerous ways to redesign a basement, you’re no longer stuck with the limited floor choices of the past. A basement no longer has to be the banished zone of the home either. With countless ways to set up the extra room in your home, worrying about moisture will also no longer be a thing of concern with a floor from Timeless Designs. No matter how you plan on setting up your downstairs space, it can now be livable.
