Exceptional Kitchen Floors
Monday, October 12, 2015

You may dream of a time when you can spend all of your time in your bedroom, relaxing or sleeping. But let’s face it, even if you did have the opportunity to be in your bedroom all day, you’d probably find a way to not constantly be on your feet. However there is one room in your home that you do spend the majority of time on your feet. The kitchen.

By now, it should be common knowledge that while solid hardwood gives any home a definitive ambiance, depending on the type of wood, it may not be the most enduring floor. Alternatively, laminate floor has been given a bad rap for years, because although it stands up the toughest factors of life, it wasn’t necessarily enchanting enough. Though everyone has their own tastes and likes, when it comes to kitchen flooring choices, solid hardwood and laminate are both choices that have an elegant look, but can also withstand being in the busiest room in the house.

Solid Hardwood

  • Solid wood floors can last lifetimes in one home — with the proper care. Easy, routine maintenance of wood floors consists of sweeping, vacuuming (check for the solid hardwood setting), and cleaning up spills quickly with a damp mop or paper towel.
  • What makes wood floors a continuous top-selling flooring choice is that they can be sanded and refinished — repeatedly. So if you’re concerned about one too many scratches appearing on this kitchen floor, keep in mind they can have their life extended.
  • It’s a well-known fact that solid hardwood floors and moisture aren’t good friends. But it’s good to note that wood floors can be installed on or above grade. However, if you are concerned about excess moisture, choose a vinyl- or plastic-lined underlayment.
  • Solid hardwood gives you the most variety when looking for a particular color or certain grain pattern. There are hundreds — even thousands — species of wood in the world. So whether you’re looking for unfinished, pre-finished, or a specific color, a wood floor is certainly the way to go.

Laminate Flooring

  • Made from pressed wood, laminate is extremely durable and has the capability to withstand scratches. It also resists stains.
  • As you spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, it’s a smart option to have a kitchen floor that is forgiving to novice chefs. Laminate floors also need simple routine care; break out the broom or the vacuum for a deep and quick cleaning method.
  • However, for an accident or spill that can’t be cleaned by the vacuum or broom, a damp mop cleans up most spills. Just, ensure you use a damp mop on your laminate kitchen floors — a soaking wet one could cause unwanted damage.
  • Laminate can endure moist areas, but like several other flooring choices, it won’t stand up well to standing pools of water. Don’t let that turn you away from laminate flooring, because it can be installed with a moisture barrier in place. So laminate is suitable for moist spaces and can be installed above almost any surface.
