Wooden Flooring: Maintenance Basics
Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Hardwood or wooden floor sales have been continuously on the rise for the last couple of years. Industry statistics showed a staggering 66% rise in wooden flooring sales in 2015 and an 84% rise was recorded in 2014. These resounding figures are due to a variety of factors but the biggest contributor to the popularity of hardwood floors is fact that they are extremely easy to maintain and last much longer than conventional floors. However, they do require a certain level of regular care without which they might become susceptible to damage and degradation.

Here is a list of a few steps to take in order to protect and extend the life of your wooden floors:

a. Clean regularly

Irrespective of the kind of floor you have, maintenance starts with regular cleaning. Leave a spilled drink or liquid for too long and it tends to get sucked up into the floor surface leaving a permanent stain that can’t be removed in any way, instead you’ll have to replace the whole panel. The key here is to sweep or mop the floor at least twice daily or as often as required.

b. Protect from moisture

Moisture has been scientifically proven to enhance the growth of harmful agents and the same is quite similar here. Moisture in wood means an ideal environment for the growth of pests and termites which can slowly eat away the entire floor leaving you with no choice but to replace it completely.

c. Inspect the floor from time to time

It is recommended that every 3-4 months you must clearly survey your entire floor for any cracks, stains or damage. It is particularly important to check the corners and the portions hidden away under furniture and rugs etc. This allows you to detect any anomalies at the right time before they’ve had time to grow. The longer you neglect or delay the inspection or maintenance, the higher costs you’ll have to pay to get the damage sorted.

d. Protective coverings

This is particularly important for people who have pets in the house or those who regularly move their furniture from one place to another because these activities leave scratches on the surface and deface the entire floor spoiling its appearance. Numerous kinds of coatings exist for hardwood floors and you can choose one that best suits your living style.

e. Abstain from using dangerous chemicals

Wooden floors despite their appeal are not very durable against damages from corrosive chemicals. It might be a good idea to ask the specialist who comes to install the floor to guide you on the most appropriate ways to clean your floor so that you may not damage it with chemicals that are not recommended.

Wooden floors have numerous benefits; they are easy to install, easy to maintain, environment friendly and come in a variety of shades and designs. However, it is important to keep them regularly maintained in order to avoid any heavy damages. Cleaning and moping at least twice a day, protecting form moisture and corrosive chemicals and using protective coverings to prevent scratches are some of the golden tips to keep the floor in top notch shape.
