All You Need To Know About Tile Kitchen Flooring
Friday, February 16, 2018

Kitchen is probably the most used room in any house as families spend most of their time together here. It is the prime location for cooking and serving food to doing homework and entertaining family gatherings.

The kitchen floor takes some massive thumping throughout a single day given the constant commotion of people moving and pets rambling around. Also, since most houses have their garden doors opening in the kitchen, the floor is always a victim to mud and dirt trails which can leave permanent stains if not cleaned in time.

Since there are so many flooring options available, selecting the perfect one is a hard job. Even the most commonly used tile flooring has two types to offer, which are porcelain and ceramic tiles. Below are a few things every homeowner should know about the tile family when deciding to go for either designs.

All You Need To Know About Tile Kitchen Flooring

Porcelain Flooring

A subtype of tiles, porcelain is highly durable as it’s produced at an extremely high temperature that makes it strong and also waterproof. Given its durability, it’s a recommended option for heavily used kitchens in houses with children and pets.

Porcelain tiles are hygienic and easily washable while also being hard to chip off. They are usually evenly sized so to avoid any dirt gathering in gaps. It is also immune to all sorts of spills and resistant to stains and marks.

However, they also have a few disadvantages such as they can only be installed through special tools which make DIY an unlikely option. They are more expensive than ceramics costing around $14 per square foot and are not repairable, if they chip once; they shall remain the same permanently. As they are harder than other tiles, carpeting is needed to make it comfortable to stand over them barefoot for longer periods.

Ceramic Flooring

Ceramic Flooring

The more favorite of the two types of tile flooring, ceramics are more budget friendly while also providing wide options in color, shape, pattern and size. Being called as non-porcelain due to their contrasting characteristics, the clay based tiles are softer and easier to install but have to be glazed for a hard surface. The tiles are also an inexpensive option for getting an elegant look for your kitchen that resembles a wood like design. Unlike porcelain, ceramics cost only up to $8 per uninstalled tile.

However ceramic flooring also comes with a few cons with one being that its glazed surface makes it uncomfortable to stand on as a result mats and carpets are installed to do away the discomfort.
As the surface isn’t hard enough, ceramics are not water resistant and liquids as well as moisture can seep through the unsettled gaps causing the tiles to crack.

For anyone choosing between the two members of the tile family can weigh in the above comparison while also consulting professionals to ensure a long lasting and beautiful kitchen.
